In 1869, at Monet’s urging, the two artists began to paint at La Grenouillere, a fashionable restaurant on the banks of the Seine near Paris. There­after they often worked together, painting the same motif side by side, and together they made an important breakthrough in their technique. Using rapid brushstrokes of brilliant hue, they evoked the reflections of the water and the sky, portraying the optical effects of what they were painting.

Without money for travel, Renoir was forced to spend most of his time in Paris. However, he enjoyed the city animation, its elegant women, and its cafes frequented by artists and writers. In April 1874, he took part in the first Impressionist exhibition with The Loge, his first painting of the world of the theater.

In 1876 Renoir settled in Montmartre, where he often painted his garden, and he also took his easel to the Moulin de la Galette, a bustling outdoor cafe close to his home, where he socialized with his painter friends. He also cultivated a network of friendships in the world of society, which sustained his career as a portraitist, and allowed him at last to lead a comfortable life.

In 1882 Renoir was able to realize his dream of traveling to Italy to study the art of the Renaissance, and to North Africa, to see its brilliant light. These two trips prompted him to question the tenets of Impressionism and attach increasing importance to traditional draftsmanship. As time went on his brushwork became softer and more delicate, and he began to favor soft pinks in his palette. His favorite subjects were female figures, whether in portraits (Young Girls at the Piano) or depictions of nudes in landscape surroundings, which he called “my nymphs.”

In 1903 he settled definitively in Cagnes-sur-Mer, near Nice in southern France. Despite the onset of paralysis in his hands, he never stopped painting large nudes, powerful and magnificent figures rendered in intense, sparkling colors. These large canvases express his ongoing love af­fair with the female body, as well as the irrepressible vitality of his appreciation for the visible world.

‘In giclee printing, no screen or other mechanical devices are used and therefore there is no visible dot screen pattern. The image has all the tonalities and hues of the original painting. Giclee (pronounced Geeclay) is a French term meaning to spray or squirt, which is how an inkjet printer works. However, it is not the same as a standard desktop inkjet printer, and is much larger.’

A canvas print is also not printed on a ‘normal’ ink jet printer, we use a wide-format Epson  printer especially designed for creating giclee canvas prints, another very important point to make is that a true giclee print needs to be printed using pigment inks, these pigment inks display far clearer colour than solvent, flat-bed or dye sub ink/printer combinations and are very UV resistant meaning that the canvas prints we create keep them strong, vibrant colours for up to 75 years!

The alternative printers that are sometimes used by sign printers and some of the other canvas printers (especially the chain stores) are not suited to canvas prints. The colours are not designed for artwork and will usually fade quickly and will never hold there colour like a pigment ink.

Large retailers and  national photo printing companies etc do not use pigment ink printers and sometimes the canvas prints are printed in China on massive flat-bed printers on an unknown and often undisclosed canvas type. When you hold one of these in your hand at the same time as one of our canvases you will be amazed that anyone even buys the cheap, poor quality canvases sometimes sold by our competitors and rolled out as ‘canvas art’.

Ask your canvas print provider if the inks used are pigment inks as these be the only inks used  for fine art and photographic work. They are extremely well-suited to canvas printing due to their broad colour gamut and lack of odour. The broader the colour gamut, the more colours and the more accurate the colours.
